Here we go

Could the prescription insert be any more dramatic? Death, death, death, and “use an electric razor.”

Began methotrexate today. It is “widely used in inflammatory myopathies as the first immunosuppressive agent and its efficacy is reported in a large percentage of patients.”

Methotrexate keeps cells from dividing by blocking some of the actions of the vitamin folic acid in the body (folic acid is required to help cells divide and replicate). When the immune system is overactive, those cells tend to be the fastest growing and are (ideally) handily knocked out by this drug.

To make sure that methotrexate hasn’t impacted the body’s production of red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells (which help fight infections), anyone taking this drug should have a complete blood count every 1-3 months.
